Natural light optimisation

Lutron roller blinds demonstrating Natural Light Optimisation on the Lutron stand at ISE 2025

Natural Light Optimisation (NLO) for Lutron blinds is a feature of HomeWorks and RadioRA 3. The premise is simple. NLO uses an astronomical timeclock and a home's latitude, longitude and and window orientation to set optimal positions for blinds throughout the day. NLO has been around for a couple of years but it's now been extended to encompass all Lutron's blinds solutions which makes it far more usable.

Programming can combine different priorities:

  • Light Optimisation is a general purpose program to make the most of natural light.
  • Heat/Fade Fighter is more biased to protect interior furnishings, artwork and valuable items from the sun while keeping interior spaces comfortable.
  • Glare Control is ideal for home offices and other spaces where productive focus is the priority.
  • View Optimisation prioritises the external views.

While these different modes are available as pre-programmed templates, homeowners can override any of the automations at any time. The Lutron app allows automations to be enabled/disabled in any area. Activity Tracker shows upcoming automations and for ease-of-use automations can be paused with a simple button press.

We've discussed this with a client with a view to testing it. They're quite excited about the prospect and it will give us the chance to test the functionality in a real-world environment.
