Lighting for a new-build house in the New Forest
A sympathetic, practical lighting scheme brings out the natural beauty of his new build house in the New Forest.
Residential lighting design has been at the heart of what we do since we set up Brilliant Lighting in 2003.
Our offering has since expanded to include lighting design for retail, hotels, bars & restaurants, churches and fine art, but residential lighting projects still form a significant proportion of our work.
Our residential lighting design portfolio is made up of a mixture of new builds and major renovations. We work on a very wide range of architectural styles: contemporary new builds, ancient barns, country houses, stately homes, castles and sleek city centre townhouses.
Our clients are as individual as their homes, and we love understanding and helping to create a unique vision for each space. Homes are hugely personal, and most people only do major building projects once in their lifetime. For many clients, it’s hard to articulate what they’d like, bewildering as to how to get there and essential to get it right.
We work very closely with our end clients as well as architects, interior designers, kitchen and bathroom designers, pool designers, garden designers, M&E consultants to create schemes which are inspirational, perfectly tailored and technically leading edge. We try to demystify the lighting design process and lead our clients through how it fits within the overall build programme.
Part of our DNA is about delivering long term value. We believe in doing things well and doing them once. Not only does this bring you joy on day one, but it reduces the pain down the track – and it really is painful to have to change cabling, patch ceilings, channel walls, buy new light fittings etc if the design or the kit used wasn’t right the first time. We pride ourselves on our attention to detail: in our technical specifications, in our design drawings and installation designs. It’s an approach that helps our clients get maximum value from their lighting scheme.
Our structure and processes are geared around providing you with a comprehensive view of your lighting project. Ideally we get involved with projects very early and typically we’re one of the last members of a build team to leave as we finalise and tune lighting scenes after you have moved into your home. Our services include lighting design, lighting control commissioning & programming, architectural and decorative fitting supply, specifying and installing electronic blinds and curtain tracks.
Great lighting is not all about technology but lighting control plays an important role in residential lighting design. Lighting control systems such as Lutron HomeWorks QS dim LED based lighting systems beautifully and make controlling large open plan spaces simple with intuitive, easy-to-use keypads.
Brilliant Lighting is a Lutron HomeWorks Diamond dealer (the only UK Diamond dealer outside the South-East). HomeWorks QS is Lutron’s flagship residential lighting control system offering whole house lighting control and control of electronic curtain tracks and blinds.

We’ve recently published a case study on lighting a Georgian townhouse and contemporary mews. In this post we’re going to have a look at what goes into a lighting design like this particular project. We’ll look at how the initial designs for a space translate into lighting design concepts. We’ll…
