We’re lucky to have the chance to work on the most magnificent buildings. Lighting this Grade II listed barn has been challenging, fun and educational in equal measure. Towering ceilings, the listed status and a large multi-functional space make for an interesting lighting challenge.
The lighting needs to be able to complement the architecture and be coherent across the space. The dining area features a large sail to bring intimacy to mealtimes and presents a real challenge to get light onto the table. The dining area, the library and working spaces in the mezzanine levels are all indvidually zoned with light controlled by the Lutron HomeWorks lighting control system.

The main living space is the original barn, the glazed link joins the old barn to the new build area which contains the bedrooms and bathrooms. The glazed link is a very modern statement, needs lighting that is sympathetic to the architecture and has to work with the overall scheme when viewed from both inside and outside. The scale of the construction can't be understimated; the glazed link is the height of typical two-storey house.
The glazed link is a key part of the architecture and it links the original barn and the new-build elements. Our lighting brings the different elements of the scheme together.
The sheer size of the barn makes it important to select fittings with sufficient output. There are limited fixing points and it's important that we minimise our impact on the fabric of the building; both the beams and the floor offer opportunities but it’s essential to use fittings with enough output to light the space.
The fittings we’re using here are 1400+ lumens with a deeply recessed light source and glare guards. These unobtrusive ground recessed floor lights do a huge amount of the work in lighting the vast roof space of this barn.
The double-height windows and glazed link are shaded with Lutron's electric curtain tracks and blinds. They're wonderfully quiet and the perfect solution to the challenges presented by the huge glazed areas.
