Lighting design for a lovely barn conversion in West Yorkshire featuring a swimming pool, gym & sauna, double height kitchen/dining room and a golf room
Our brief for this project was to light the barn’s key spaces: the kitchen dining area with its mezzanine floor, the golf room, and the pool/gym area. These were the spaces the clients envisioned as the heart of family life, making it essential to get the light levels and effects just right. The Lutron HomeWorks system is a key element in achieving this. The control system allows the mood, look and feel of the space to be transformed at the touch of a button.
The interiors of the house reflect the design and thought put into the scheme by our clients. Natural colour schemes are balanced by rich textures and intricate details. In addition to the main lighting, the downlights and surface spots, which naturally highlight the interiors, we added decorative touches to enhance key features. At the dining end of the kitchen, a beautiful section of stone wall is showcased with decorative table lamps. These are integrated into the Lutron HomeWorks system, allowing them to be part of the overall kitchen and dining scene settings.
The copper splashback behind the AGA adds a striking burst of colour amidst the soft creams and whites. Small recessed mini downlights, mounted within the cooker hood highlight this standout feature and importantly also provide practical task lighting for cooking.
It’s not every day we’re asked to light a golf room! This multi-functional space serves as a golf simulator, a yoga studio, and a relaxed setting for movie nights or entertaining friends. The lighting has to be as versatile as the room itself: bright for golf practice, serene for yoga, cosy for movie nights and lively for gatherings.
The combintion of Lutron HomeWorks control, flexible design and expert programming makes that versatility possible. We're considering scene setting and programming from the earliest design stages, making sure the space adapts perfectly to every use.
Working closely with the interior designer, we integrated diffused linear LEDs into the velvet-panelled walls. On the cosy cinema lighting setting, this creates a soft, gentle glow that enhanced the atmosphere. We collaborated with the joinery manufacturers to incorporate diffused linear LEDs into the bar unit, which serves as the room’s striking centrepiece. The black surface mounted LED spotlights blend seamlessly with the dark ceiling, providing the main source of light when needed. We've colour matched the fittings to the interiors to ensure they blend effortlessly into the space; the focus remains on the design rather than the fixtures.
The barn housing the pool and gym continues the natural interiors theme seen in the main house and kitchen, with a focus on wood and stone. We used bronze finished surface spots and uplights to suit the colour scheme. The primary source of lighting in the pool area comes from high output LED linear fittings, discreetly mounted on the beams above the windows running the length of the pool. We've taken a similar approach in the gym, where the LED is concealed behind a downstand, washing light down the wall.
All our projects are different; we're guided by the architecture, the interior bone structure, and look & feel. These case studies show different approaches to tackling some of the challenges faced in both barn conversion and swimming pool lighting projects.
